Book Description:
Overwhelmed by the horrors of World War II, Samuele returns to his primitive village, a sworn pacifist, refusing to avenge and to kill. Hated by all, he finds: solace and love in Franca, and purpose in his bullock which he trains for the feast of the Straw Obelisk. A sociological study of the effects of war on this village, the novel culminates in the pulling of the Obelisk through five miles of congested terrain, drawn by five teams of oxen. While Samuele and Franca are movingly portrayed, the village is reminiscent of all the drama and savagery of Silone's novels.
